Cavities, also known as tooth decay and dental caries, are a big dental issue in the world today. That’s right—tooth decay plagues many smiles. If you’re not careful, the decay can severely harm and damage your teeth and gums; it can even result in tooth loss! So it’s best to prevent tooth decay as much as possible. However, because it’s oftentimes tough to clean around braces, tooth decay is quite common for people aligning their smiles.
To help you fight tooth decay regularly, Dr. Amy Richter and our orthodontic team have some tips for you.
First, keep up on oral hygiene regularly. Your routine should include brushing twice a day with a soft-bristled toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste, flossing once a day with an easy-to-use flossing product, and rinsing your mouth daily with antibacterial or fluoride mouthwash. To help you perform these tasks, there are special oral hygiene tools that can easily clean in and around braces. Please refer to our “Special Cleaning Tools” page for this information.
Second, visit your dentist regularly. When you attend your checkups, your dentist and dental team will deeply clean your smile, focusing on the hard-to-reach areas around your appliance. This will remove the built-up plaque that promotes and creates cavities.
Third, use fluoride. Fluoride is a beneficial mineral that strengthens and nourishes your teeth. With the help of this mineral, you can prevent cavities. You can find fluoride in fluoride toothpaste, fluoride mouthwash, fluoridated water, and in the professional fluoride treatment offered at your dental office.
